"Demystifying IVF Injections:
What You Need to Know"

Written by Takera Mitchell, RN, BSN

Things You Need About your IVF Injections

If you or someone you know is on the journey to parenthood through IVF, you’re likely familiar with the importance of injections in the process. While the idea of self-administered injections may seem daunting at first, understanding the process can ease anxiety and stress. At Preferred Fertility Concierge, we’re here to provide you with the knowledge and support you need to navigate this crucial aspect of IVF and infertility.

the exact dosing of medications will be determined by your fertility specialist (RE- reproductive endocrinologist).

1. The Purpose of IVF Injections

In vitro fertilization (IVF) injections are pivotal in the IVF journey. They primarily stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which can be retrieved and fertilized in the lab. This step is critical for those struggling with infertility or for single women planning to preserve their fertility through egg freezing.

2. Types of Medications

Your specific medication protocol may vary based on your unique situation. Common medications include follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). These hormones are administered to stimulate egg development and trigger ovulation. They are typically done in an area with fatty tissue, most commonly in the abdomen.

3. Managing Medication Inventory and Storage

Maintaining an organized inventory of your IVF medications is crucial. Keep track of your medications and ensure you have an adequate supply for at least ten days. Proper storage is also vital to maintain the effectiveness of the medications.

Store medications per the instructions provided, typically in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Some medications may require refrigeration, so be aware of specific storage requirements. Contact the pharmacy if you are unsure if a medication needs to be refrigerated.

4. Following Your Medication Protocol

Adhering to your prescribed medication protocol is absolutely crucial during your IVF journey. Here’s why it’s vital:

Optimal Timing: Your medication protocol is carefully designed to sync with your body’s natural hormone fluctuations. Deviating from the schedule can affect the timing of egg retrieval and fertilization, potentially impacting the success of your IVF cycle.

Egg Quality and Quantity: Consistency in medication administration ensures that your ovaries produce a sufficient number of mature eggs of the highest quality. Skipping or altering doses can compromise these outcomes.

Safety and Monitoring: Your healthcare team monitors your progress based on the prescribed protocol. Any adjustments needed along the way are based on this plan. Deviating from the protocol can make it challenging for your medical team to make accurate adjustments.

Minimizing Risks: Skipping or altering medications can introduce risks and complications. Your healthcare team has carefully tailored your protocol to minimize these risks, and deviations may lead to unforeseen issues.

5. Timing Is Key

IVF medication injections are typically administered daily, and the timing is crucial. You may be given a time frame for when you should take your medications. This is commonly between 6:00 and 10:00 pm or 6:00 and 10:00 am. You may be instructed to take medications once or twice per day. Your healthcare team will provide a clear schedule, ensuring you don’t miss a dose. This precision maximizes the chances of a successful IVF cycle. The timing of the trigger shot is extremely important in dictating when your eggs are retrieved. It must be administered at the exact time specified by your doctor.

6. Self-Administration and Nurse Support

Many individuals and couples worry about self-administering these injections. However, at Preferred Fertility Concierge, our registered nurses are here to provide one-on-one medication training and support. You won’t be alone in this process; we’ll guide you every step, showing you how to safely mix and administer your injections, or we can do it for you.

You Don't Have to Navigate this Journey Alone

There are things you don’t know or don’t know, and that’s ok. Having a trusted partner and fertility concierge who is experienced in this process can help you prepare for the unknown.

7. Injection Techniques

Proper injection technique is essential for comfort and effectiveness. Your will teach you how to prepare and administer the injections, ensuring you feel confident and at ease. They can also provide tips for minimizing discomfort that lessens the anxiety and stress of the process. Some medications are administered subcutaneously into fatty tissue, while others may be intramuscular, typically in your buttocks.

8. Managing Potential Side Effects

IVF medications can sometimes lead to side effects like bloating, mood swings, or discomfort at the injection site. Communicating any side effects with your healthcare team is essential; they can adjust your treatment if necessary. Our team is here to address your concerns and provide solutions to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

Increasing awareness about fibroids and their impact on fertility is essential to empower individuals to take charge of their reproductive health. Here are a few ways to promote fibroid awareness:
